172" Mean Machine," project., 25 Mar. 2012 13:13

This is the beginning of a long cosmetic overhaul and big bore upgrade. I had to borrow this photo, as didn‘t have one, so apologies.

so far lucky with the screws, but this scooter has been garaged most of its life, only less than 8k KMs.

back end stripped off, ready for paint preparation. Really lucky that all screws came out with giant screwdriver, as I know many of you have to drill them out.

compared to the Gilera Runner 50cc, much larger engine, hence less working space.

have to go out, so that is it for today, but want this scooter up and running in a couple of weeks for bike rallies. I am lucky that I have a car and another working bike and three other project bikes, but the Hexagon is the one I want finished.

172 cylinder, sprayed black with VHT paint, hopefully it will disperse heat better.

Tinted screen, to match new black bike.

newer lights, going to tint slightly.

as weather not good and no garage, ended up on bed with ply sheet and old rags on top. Got cylinder off, changed both crank seals, one was almost blown out, put a drop of loctite on the outer edge to help new seal. The reeds, I could see daylight through at the tip, no wonder it was a poor starter, so will be changing for carbon fibre ones. I had some primary gears from a FX 180 Gilera Runner, pre-rolling nut, but on examining the internals of the 10 inch wheel 125 Hexagon gearbox, noticed they had the same amount of teeth on both the gear and the gear on the input shaft, the primary gear from the 180 is not as thick, so that effort was a waste of time.

engine back in, with new reeds, new crank seals and 172cc kit + new small end bearing. I adjusted 3mm advance on oil pump and bled the system. Also bled the cooling system. I think I used too much build oil as it was a bugger to get the first fire, but since then been experimenting with jetting, running a 85 at moment, but will try bigger tomorrow after trying with air cleaner on. I did lower the clip one position, but it didn‘t like that, even with original main jet. Also fitted new rear suspension.

jetting on carb finished with 88 main jet, clip on throttle slide lowered one notch and a tweak of the mixture screw, this will do until bike cosmetics finished so I can get on a dyno. Put a rack on the front with load bearing supports, rubber and metal washers and a piece of 2mm plate on back of panel, will be looking for a larger plate. Not everybody will like, and the chrome is going black as is the radiator grille cover. I am not a precision engineer and have no access to machine shop, so basic tools like grinder.

front end finished, all but mirrors and hand guards. Took it for its first ride as a 172cc, the pull away is a lot more crisp, right up to 70 kph, no faster as bedding new parts in. All seems well, but will be checking things over the next week or so, bolts becoming loose. On the week-end, it is back on the lift, have the rear and sides to add modifications to, will probably take 2 weeks. Really pleased with efforts so far.

thanks for the encouragement, indeed a scooter for the background of a " Mad Max," film was my goal. I am not an engineer and the quality isn‘t as good as some of the projects on here, but it works. The 172cc has no big carb or free flow exhaust, but it still delivers much more power than the 125cc, in real useful situations, like brisk pull away and 0-80 Km/h. I took it out for an hour today, got many looks, especially with Iron Maiden blasting through the speakers .......... because nobody knows what bike it is. Hexagons are quite rare in England, especially modified ones. I will supply more photo‘s for a better look at different angles.I have not completely finished, but enough for a while ...................... time to ride. |

High guns Tt is great pity that you stay in England otherwise you can meet us in Dassel (Hexagon Meeting) and we park your Scooter beside of the Scooter from fucking Devil.(Galerie) That will be a nice Ying & Yang The pretty and the beast. But maybe it is possible you have enough Time Vacation and make a nice Testride to Germany: I,am shure you get The Price for the longest Trip. |

I didn‘t want any chrome on this theme, was a nuisance to get rid of, much sanding and acid etch primer. the fuel economy of the 172cc is 5.1 litres per 100 kilometres or 55mpg, and that was on a run of a good couple of hundred miles, so around town, expect around 40mpg. But the jetting is rich and when it is more finely tuned I expect it to improve. Was a good ride to see a mate, YSS rear suspension is good, made the trip easier, it is all too easy to get used to a bad shock absorber and not notice the demise, until you change it and realize, what you was putting up with. In less than a month, will be going to a meet and covering about 800 kilometres in a week-end, that is sore back side territory, lol. As for coming to Germany, I have quite a few events here to attend this year but it could be a good plan. This has been a bit of a rush project, as I was desperate to get it on the road, it is not comparable to the quality of fucking devils bike and I owe him the inspiration for my bike build. I only have this photo bit will do more, still have plans for more, projector spot lamps, many gauges and undecided what to do with wheels, was going to change them for 11 inch, in any case will paint when fitting new tyres when these get low.

as I was in rush to get riding this bike, all I did was bolt a 172cc kit on and calibrate the carb to suit. I now have spare Runner casings, drum brake model, to work on in my spare time. Going to flow the carters and match the transfers to a PM Pro Street skull cap cylinder and port for a SIP down-pipe. No real rush, as 172 engine is running nice. Be tuning not for out and out speed, but quick touring speed.
